Conventional vs. Synthetic Oil: What Your Toyota Needs

Most Toyotas built in the last 15 years are designed around 0W-20 full synthetic oil, and the service interval is written around it. Here is what separates conventional from synthetic, what Toyota specifies and how often to change it.

Quick answer

Synthetic oil is refined and engineered to a tighter standard than conventional oil, so it flows better in a cold Elgin winter, resists breaking down at high temperature and keeps its protection longer. Toyota specifies SAE 0W-20 full synthetic for most current engines and sets the change interval at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Engines that allow 5W-20 or 5W-30 conventional oil stay on a 5,000-mile or 6-month interval even if synthetic is used, and any Toyota driven under special operating conditions goes back to 5,000 miles.

What the two oils are

Conventional

Refined from crude oil with additives. It does the job on older engines but thickens more in the cold, thins more when hot and breaks down sooner, which is why its interval is shorter.

Full synthetic

Built from more uniform base oils to a tighter specification. Better cold-start flow, better high-heat stability, less sludge and a longer interval. 0W-20 synthetic is what Toyota's current engines and hybrids are designed around.

Synthetic blend

A mix of the two. Toyota's schedule does not treat a blend as a synthetic: if the engine is on the 0W-20 full-synthetic interval, use full synthetic.

0W-20 applies to most 2010-and-newer Toyotas; the conventional row is for older engines that allow 5W-20 or 5W-30. Intervals are whichever comes first. Dirt roads, towing, repeated short trips below 32 degrees F and extended idling all count as special operating conditions.

Special operating conditions in Toyota's guide: driving on dirt or dusty roads, towing or carrying heavy loads, repeated trips of under five miles in temperatures below 32 degrees F, and extensive idling or low-speed driving. Much winter commuting in the northwest suburbs fits the short-trip rule.

Is synthetic worth the price?

On a Toyota that calls for 0W-20, the question answers itself: the engine was designed around it and the 10,000-mile interval assumes it. On an older engine that allows conventional oil, synthetic still protects better in cold starts and hot summer traffic, but the interval stays at 5,000 miles, so the saving is in wear, not in fewer visits.

Between changes, the 5,000-mile visit is not skipped. Toyota's schedule rotates the tires and inspects brakes, fluids and wipers at every 5,000 miles even when the oil stays in.

Covered on a new Toyota

ToyotaCare covers normal factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles on a new Toyota, which includes the 10,000- and 20,000-mile oil changes and the 5,000-mile rotations and inspections, plus 24-hour roadside assistance for 2 years with unlimited miles. When the first oil change is due explains the timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Does Toyota require synthetic oil?

Toyota specifies the viscosity grade and standard for each engine. Most current Toyotas and all Toyota hybrids call for 0W-20 full synthetic, and the 10,000-mile interval applies only when it is used.

How often should I change synthetic oil in a Toyota?

Every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, on engines that require 0W-20. Under special operating conditions such as towing, dirt roads or repeated short cold trips, every 5,000 miles.

Can I switch from conventional to synthetic?

Yes. They are compatible, and no flush is needed. Use the grade on the oil cap and in the owner's manual.

Can I mix synthetic and conventional oil?

Topping up with the same grade of either is fine in a pinch. Return to full synthetic at the next change if the engine is on the 0W-20 schedule.

Does ToyotaCare cover synthetic oil changes?

ToyotaCare covers the factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles, using the oil Toyota specifies for the engine.
