2027 Toyota Prius MPG by Grade and Drivetrain

Every 2027 Prius is a hybrid, so its fuel economy comes down to two choices: the grade (the LE on 17-inch wheels, or the XLE, Nightshade and Limited on 19-inch wheels) and the drivetrain (front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive). Here are the ratings for each version, the EPA records behind them, how they compare with the 2026 Prius, a rough range per tank, and the government's advice on why mileage drops in a Chicago-area winter. Figures are from toyota.com and fueleconomy.gov, read October 29, 2026.

The EPA groups versions under its own labels rather than by Toyota grade names; toyota.com gives the Nightshade the same ratings as the XLE and Limited.

From fueleconomy.gov records 49301, 49298, 49300 and 49299 (2026) and 50501, 50498, 50500 and 50499 (2027), read October 29, 2026. The 2027 ratings are higher in the city and lower on the highway and combined than the 2026 ratings for every version. If you are shopping a 2026 Prius, its window sticker shows the 2026 figures.

One hybrid powertrain, two drive systems

Every 2027 Prius uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (toyota.com lists 150 hp at 6,000 rpm and 139 lb-ft at 4,400-5,200 rpm), a front permanent-magnet AC synchronous motor of 83 kW (111 hp), a lithium-ion battery and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT).

Toyota.com lists hybrid system net power of 194 hp for front-wheel-drive versions. AWD versions add a 30 kW (40 hp) rear motor for Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive and are listed at 196 hp.

The LE is the only grade on 17-inch wheels (195/60R17 tires); the XLE, Nightshade and Limited ride on 19-inch wheels (195/50R19). Toyota.com lists curb weights from 3,097 lb (LE FWD) to 3,340 lb (Limited AWD). In toyota.com's ratings, the LE is rated 4 mpg higher combined than the 19-inch grades with FWD (55 versus 51) and 5 mpg higher with AWD (53 versus 48).

Toyota.com lists a hybrid battery warranty of 120 months or 150,000 miles on every 2027 Prius grade. This guide covers the Prius hybrid. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is a separate model with its own EPA ratings, and the figures on this page do not apply to it.

How far can a Prius go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists an 11.3-gallon fuel tank on front-wheel-drive versions and 10.5 gallons on AWD versions. Multiplied by the combined ratings, that gives a rough range of about 621 miles for an LE FWD (11.3 x 55), about 576 miles for an XLE, Nightshade or Limited FWD (11.3 x 51), about 556 miles for an LE AWD (10.5 x 53) and about 504 miles for an XLE, Nightshade or Limited AWD (10.5 x 48).

That is our arithmetic from the published ratings, not a range figure from Toyota or the EPA. Speed, temperature, load and trip length all change real-world range.

Why your Prius's MPG drops in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says hybrids typically see a 20% to 40% fuel economy loss in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips in cold weather, compared with 10% to 20% and 15% to 33% for conventional gasoline vehicles. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read October 29, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%, with smaller vehicles affected more than larger ones.

2027 Toyota Prius MPG FAQ

What MPG does the 2027 Toyota Prius get?

Toyota.com rates the 2027 Prius from 51 mpg city / 45 highway / 48 combined (XLE, Nightshade and Limited with AWD) up to 59 / 50 / 55 (LE with front-wheel drive). The EPA records on fueleconomy.gov show the same figures.

Which Prius gets the best gas mileage?

The 2027 Prius LE with front-wheel drive, at 59 mpg city, 50 highway and 55 combined. The LE with AWD is next at 56 / 49 / 53.

Does AWD lower the Prius's MPG?

Yes, slightly. On the LE, toyota.com lists 55 mpg combined for FWD and 53 for AWD. On the XLE, Nightshade and Limited, it lists 51 for FWD and 48 for AWD. AWD versions also have a smaller fuel tank: 10.5 gallons versus 11.3.

Why does the Prius get better MPG in the city than on the highway?

Every 2027 Prius version is rated higher in the city than on the highway, for example 59 city and 50 highway on the LE FWD. Toyota and the EPA do not give a reason on the pages used here; fueleconomy.gov does note that gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 50 mph.

How far can a Prius go on a tank of gas?

Toyota.com lists an 11.3-gallon tank on FWD versions and 10.5 gallons on AWD. At the combined ratings, that works out to roughly 621 miles for an LE FWD (11.3 x 55), 576 miles for an XLE, Nightshade or Limited FWD (11.3 x 51), 556 miles for an LE AWD (10.5 x 53) and 504 miles for the other AWD grades (10.5 x 48). This is simple math from the ratings, not a Toyota or EPA range figure.

Is the 2027 Prius rated differently from the 2026 Prius?

Yes. Fueleconomy.gov lists the 2026 Prius FWD at 57 city / 56 highway / 57 combined and the 2027 Prius FWD at 59 / 50 / 55. The 2027 ratings are higher in the city and lower on the highway and combined for every version. Check the window sticker for the model year you are looking at.

Does the Prius need premium gas?

No. The fueleconomy.gov records for every 2027 Prius version list regular gasoline.

Why is my Prius's MPG lower in winter?

Fueleconomy.gov says hybrids typically lose 20% to 40% of their fuel economy in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips in cold weather, more than the 10% to 20% and 15% to 33% it gives for conventional gasoline vehicles.
