2026 Toyota Tacoma MPG by Grade and Powertrain

The 2026 Tacoma's fuel economy depends mostly on three choices: the engine (i-FORCE or the i-FORCE MAX hybrid), the transmission (automatic or manual) and the drivetrain (4x2 or 4x4). Here are the ratings for each grade, the EPA records behind them, a rough range per tank, and the government's advice on why mileage drops in a Chicago-area winter. Figures are from toyota.com and fueleconomy.gov, read October 29, 2026.

Miles per gallon. From fueleconomy.gov (U.S. EPA and Department of Energy) records for the 2026 Toyota Tacoma, all 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder and all on regular gasoline, read October 29, 2026. The EPA groups versions under its own labels (condensed here) rather than by Toyota grade names. One difference: toyota.com lists the Limited i-FORCE MAX at 23 mpg city, while the EPA Tacoma Hybrid 4WD records show 22 city; highway and combined match.

Two engines, two transmissions, three drive systems

Every 2026 Tacoma uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Toyota.com lists the i-FORCE engine at 228 hp in the SR with the automatic and 278 hp in the other i-FORCE automatic versions, with an 8-speed automatic. The 6-speed manual, offered with 4x4 on the SR, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road, is listed at 270 hp.

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid uses the same 2.4-liter turbo in a hybrid powertrain with the 8-speed automatic. Toyota.com lists 465 lb-ft of torque and 326 hp on most i-FORCE MAX grades (323 hp on the Trailhunter). It is the only powertrain toyota.com lists for the TRD Pro and Trailhunter, and an alternative to the i-FORCE on the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited.

Most 4x4 versions use 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case. The Limited i-FORCE MAX is the one version toyota.com lists with full-time four-wheel drive.

In toyota.com's ratings, the 6-speed manual is the lowest-rated choice at 20 mpg combined, and 4x4 automatics sit 1 to 2 mpg combined below their 4x2 counterparts. Every i-FORCE MAX version is rated 23 mpg combined.

How far can a Tacoma go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists an 18.2-gallon fuel tank on every 2026 Tacoma grade. Multiplied by the combined ratings, that gives a rough range of about 419 miles at 23 mpg (18.2 x 23), about 382 miles at 21 mpg and about 364 miles at 20 mpg.

That is our arithmetic from the published ratings, not a range figure from Toyota or the EPA. Towing, payload, speed, temperature and terrain all change real-world range.

Why your Tacoma's MPG drops in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids such as the i-FORCE MAX typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips. It varies by model. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read October 29, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%, with smaller vehicles affected more than larger ones.

Which 2026 Tacoma gets the best gas mileage?

On combined mpg it is a tie at 23. The highest highway rating is 26 mpg, on the 4x2 SR and SR5 automatics. The highest city rating on toyota.com is 23 mpg, on the Limited i-FORCE MAX; the other i-FORCE MAX versions are listed at 22 city.

What is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid's MPG?

Toyota.com lists 22 city / 24 highway / 23 combined for the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter i-FORCE MAX, and 23 / 24 / 23 for the Limited i-FORCE MAX with full-time 4WD. The EPA records for the 2026 Tacoma Hybrid 4WD show 22 / 24 / 23.

How much MPG does 4x4 cost on a Tacoma?

On the SR5 automatic, toyota.com lists 21 / 26 / 23 for 4x2 and 19 / 24 / 21 for 4x4: 2 mpg less in city, highway and combined driving. On the TRD Sport automatic the gap is 20 / 24 / 22 versus 19 / 23 / 21.

How far can a 2026 Tacoma go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists an 18.2-gallon fuel tank on every 2026 Tacoma grade. At the combined ratings, that works out to roughly 419 miles at 23 mpg (18.2 x 23) and 364 miles at 20 mpg (18.2 x 20). This is simple math from the ratings, not a Toyota or EPA range figure.

Does the Tacoma need premium gas?

The fueleconomy.gov records for every 2026 Tacoma version listed here show regular gasoline as the fuel type.

Why is my Tacoma's MPG lower in winter?

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips, depending on the model.
