Toyota Tops IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards

 

For yet another year, Toyota was a top pick at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) annual safety tests and awards. IIHS Requirements

The IIHS encourages automakers to improve their safety technology to create better vehicles and safer roads. For 2016, the IIHS required more rigorous criteria for automakers to even be considered for the awards. Vehicles that were considered for the Top Safety Pick were required to have an advanced designed front crash prevention system plus automatic braking.

Toyota exceeded all qualifications. In particular, the IIHS noted the addition of Toyota's innovative pre-collision system on the RAV4 and Avalon models and its stellar marks on the front crash assessments. Additionally, the Scion iA scored a high rating for front crash prevention. The IIHS noted that the Scion iA was the only affordable vehicle on the market in its class with a pre-collision system.

Top Safety Picks

Four Toyota models earned exclusive badging from the IIHS for their safety capabilities. These models are readily available at Elgin Toyota:

• The Toyota Prius has a pre-collision system in the Safety Sense package. This warns the driver about lane drifting and crossing pedestrians, while also assisting with steering and cruise control functions.

• The Toyota Camry includes standard rear view camera and tire pressure monitoring system. A blind spot monitor is also available to assist drivers in tricky spots, like crowded parking lots.

• The Toyota Avalon includes seats that reduce whiplash and an advanced ten airbag system that protects everyone in the car. The Star Safety System includes everything needed for traction, braking, and stability control.

• The Toyota RAV4 has the option for a lane departure system with an automatic steering assistance. The available auto high beam system works with a camera to detect vehicles that are up to 2,000 feet away.
