2026 Toyota Tundra MPG by Grade and Powertrain

The 2026 Tundra's fuel economy comes down to two choices: the engine (the i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 or the i-FORCE MAX hybrid) and the drivetrain (4x2 or 4x4). Here are the ratings for each grade, the EPA records behind them, a rough range per tank, and the government's advice on why mileage drops in a Chicago-area winter. Figures are from toyota.com and fueleconomy.gov, read October 29, 2026.

Miles per gallon. From fueleconomy.gov (U.S. EPA and Department of Energy) records for the 2026 Toyota Tundra, all 3.4L turbocharged V6 with a 10-speed automatic, read October 29, 2026. The EPA groups versions under its own labels rather than by Toyota grade names. Its "TRD Perf" listings carry the same mpg ratings as the matching standard listings but name premium gasoline as the fuel.

Two powertrains, two drive systems

Every 2026 Tundra uses a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Toyota.com lists the i-FORCE V6 at 358 hp and 406 lb-ft on the SR, and 389 hp and 479 lb-ft on the SR5, Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition.

The i-FORCE MAX adds a parallel hybrid system: toyota.com lists an electric motor of 48 hp and 184 lb-ft, a 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery of 1.87 kWh, and combined output of 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. It is the only powertrain toyota.com lists for the TRD Pro and Capstone, and an option on the Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition.

Toyota.com lists 4x2 versions with rear-wheel drive and an automatic limited-slip differential, and 4x4 versions with 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case.

In toyota.com's ratings, the i-FORCE MAX adds 2 mpg combined on the Limited 4x2 (22 versus 20) and 1 mpg combined on the 4x4 grades that offer both (20 versus 19). The TRD Pro, at 19 combined, is the lowest-rated i-FORCE MAX version.

How far can a Tundra go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists a 32.2-gallon fuel tank as standard on the 2026 Tundra, with one SR 4x4 configuration listed at 32.5 gallons. Multiplied by the combined ratings, a 32.2-gallon tank gives a rough range of about 708 miles at 22 mpg (32.2 x 22), about 644 miles at 20 mpg and about 612 miles at 19 mpg.

That is our arithmetic from the published ratings, not a range figure from Toyota or the EPA. Towing, payload, speed, temperature and terrain all change real-world range.

Why your Tundra's MPG drops in winter

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips. Its reasons:

Cold fluids

Cold engine oil and other drive-line fluids increase friction in the engine and transmission.

Longer warm-up

The engine takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature, which hurts short trips most.

Heat and defrost

Heated seats, window defrosters and heater fans use extra power.

Tires and air

Tire pressure drops in the cold, and denser cold air adds drag at highway speeds.

Winter gasoline

Winter blends can have slightly less energy per gallon than summer blends.

Battery

Battery performance falls in the cold, which on hybrids also affects regenerative braking.

From fueleconomy.gov's Fuel Economy in Cold Weather page, read October 29, 2026.

Getting closer to the rated numbers

Fueleconomy.gov's cold-weather advice: park in a warmer place such as a garage, combine trips so you drive less often with a cold engine, keep warm-up idling short (it notes most manufacturers recommend driving off gently after about 30 seconds), use seat warmers and defrosters only as needed, check tire pressure regularly, use the oil your manufacturer recommends for cold weather, and remove roof racks when you are not using them.

Year-round, it says aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, that mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph, and that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by about 1%, with smaller vehicles affected more than larger ones.

Which 2026 Tundra gets the best gas mileage?

The Limited i-FORCE MAX with 4x2 (rear-wheel drive), at 20 mpg city, 24 highway and 22 combined on toyota.com. It is the only 4x2 i-FORCE MAX version toyota.com lists for 2026.

What is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid's MPG?

Toyota.com lists 20 / 24 / 22 for the Limited i-FORCE MAX 4x2, 19 / 22 / 20 for the Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition and Capstone i-FORCE MAX 4x4, and 18 / 20 / 19 for the TRD Pro. The EPA records for the 2026 Tundra Hybrid match those figures.

How much MPG does 4x4 cost on a Tundra?

With the i-FORCE V6, toyota.com lists 18 / 23 / 20 for 4x2 and 17 / 22 / 19 for 4x4: 1 mpg less in city, highway and combined driving. On the Limited i-FORCE MAX the gap is 20 / 24 / 22 versus 19 / 22 / 20.

How far can a 2026 Tundra go on a tank?

Toyota.com lists a 32.2-gallon fuel tank on the 2026 Tundra (32.5 gallons on one SR 4x4 configuration). At the combined ratings, that works out to roughly 708 miles at 22 mpg (32.2 x 22), 644 miles at 20 mpg and 612 miles at 19 mpg. This is simple math from the ratings, not a Toyota or EPA range figure.

Does the Tundra need premium gas?

The fueleconomy.gov records for the standard 2026 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid versions show regular gasoline. The EPA also lists separate "TRD Perf" versions, with the same mpg ratings, as using premium gasoline. The owner's manual and fuel-door label of a specific truck give its fuel requirement.

Are there 2027 Tundra MPG ratings yet?

Not on the sources used here. On October 29, 2026, toyota.com's 2027 Tundra specifications page returned page-not-found and fueleconomy.gov listed no 2027 Tundra. For a 2027 Tundra, check the EPA figures on its window sticker.

Why is my Tundra's MPG lower in winter?

Fueleconomy.gov says conventional gasoline vehicles can expect a 10% to 20% fuel economy loss in city driving and 15% to 33% on short trips in cold weather, and hybrids typically 20% to 40% in city driving and 25% to 45% on short trips.
