Here at Elgin Toyota, we strive to make the lives of our customers better. We know your life is busy, so we'd like to help you save some time by sharing some tips for testing your own car battery at home. Give these methods a try.

A load test is a good indicator of battery strength. Give it a try by leaving your headlights on for approximately 15 minutes. Don't start your car up until that time has passed, then give it a go. As you start the engine, watch your lights. If they get dimmer, your battery has not passed the test.

Another indicator that you may need a battery replacement is corrosion on the terminals. A quick visual inspection will let you know if there is gunk on your battery's terminals. If so, use baking soda and an old toothbrush to gently scrub it off. This will help the power to transfer more readily and could extend the life of your battery.
