Since 2015, Toyota has featured the Toyota Safety Sense⢠(TSS) driver-assist package on their vehicles to help drivers keep an extra pair of eyes on the road while driving through Elgin. The Toyota Pre-Collision system is composed of features that track movement surrounding your vehicle, and gives audible and visual signals to the driver before taking corrective action. The system works by using a front-facing camera and a laser to detect objects in your vehicle's path. How Does the Toyota Pre-Collision System Work?
The Toyota Pre-Collision system works by using a front-facing camera and a laser to monitor other vehicles in your path, but how does this actually work on your daily commute to Streamwood? We've detailed the actions of the Pre-Collision system below:
- The Pre-Collision System comes with a front-facing camera and an invisible laser to help monitor the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of it.
- While monitoring your distance, the system measures your current speed and determines if you are approaching the object or vehicle ahead of you too rapidly.
- If a collision is likely, the system will alert you with audible and visual signals. At this point you should apply your brakes and slow down.Ā
- If you cannot slow down or if you fail to heed the systems warnings, the Toyota Pre-Collision system will take action and apply the brakes automatically or deploy them at full force with brake assist.
The Toyota Pre-Collision system is not a substitute for attentive driving, but it can help you avoid a collision if you are unable to do so on your own.Ā
Toyota Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
The Toyota Pre-Collision system isn't just built to monitor other vehicles in your path, it's alternate versions are also built to sense pedestrians as well. The Toyota Safety Sense⢠P (TSS P) or Toyota Safety Sense⢠2.0 (TSS 2.0) has the ability to detect pedestrians that are in your vehicle's path and respond appropriately.Ā
Vehicles with Pedestrian Detection have an additional grille-mounted system that uses millimeter-wave radar to check your vehicle's surroundings for smaller objects that the Pre-Collision system might miss on it's own. Using the millimeter-wave radar the system measures the shape, size, and motion of the smaller objects and identifies potentially vulnerable people. Like with the regular Pre-Collision system, audible and visual warnings will be given if the vehicle is approaching the pedestrian too rapidly, then it will apply the brakes if no action is taken.Ā
