How Often to Change Brake Fluid on a Toyota

Brake fluid is easy to forget until a warning light comes on. Here is what Toyota's own maintenance guides say about checking and replacing it, why it matters, and how to check the level yourself. The Toyota facts are from Toyota's Warranty & Maintenance Guides and the RAV4 Owner's Manual, read October 28, 2026.

How often does Toyota say to change brake fluid?

Toyota's current Warranty & Maintenance Guides do not give a set mileage for replacing brake fluid. In the eight guides we read (2026 Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra, and the 2025 RAV4), brake fluid level and condition are inspected under "All Fluid Levels" at every 5,000-mile interval on the maintenance chart. The guides add that your dealer may recommend services based on the inspection results.

From Toyota's Warranty & Maintenance Guides for each model listed, read October 28, 2026. The "All Fluid Levels" footnote in each guide says to inspect brake fluid level/condition, and that your dealer may recommend services (Dealer-Recommended Maintenance) based on inspection results. Your own guide and owner's manual are the final word for your vehicle.

Why brake fluid gets checked

Toyota's RAV4 Owner's Manual warns that brake fluid can absorb moisture from the air, and that excess moisture in the brake fluid can cause a dangerous loss of braking efficiency.

That is the reason the maintenance guides look at the fluid's condition, not just its level, and why the manual says to use only newly opened brake fluid when you add any.

Toyota's guides also describe Dealer-Recommended Maintenance: a dealer may recommend more frequent intervals or more services than the scheduled chart. Those extra services are not required to keep your warranty coverage, and the guides say to ask your dealer to explain any recommended maintenance not in the chart.

What Toyota's schedule checks on your brakes

These brake items appear in the maintenance charts of the guides listed above:

Brake fluid

Level and condition, as part of the All Fluid Levels inspection at every 5,000-mile interval.

Pads and discs

Brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs: visually inspected every 5,000 miles, with thickness and disc runout inspected every 30,000 miles.

Lines and hoses

Brake lines and hoses are inspection items on the maintenance chart.

Recommendations

Your dealer may recommend services based on what the inspection finds. Ask what was found and why.

Intervals are from the Toyota Warranty & Maintenance Guides read October 28, 2026. Charts vary by model and year, so check the guide for your vehicle.

How to check your brake fluid level

The RAV4 Owner's Manual explains the check in its do-it-yourself maintenance section. Your model's steps may differ, so follow your own manual:

  1. Find the brake fluid reservoir in the engine compartment. On the RAV4, the manual has you slide and lift the rubber strip and remove the service cover to reach the reservoir cap.
  2. Look at the level. It should be between the MAX and MIN lines on the tank.
  3. If you need to add fluid, use only newly opened brake fluid of the type listed in your manual, and add it slowly while checking the level.
  4. Take care: the manual warns that brake fluid can harm your hands and eyes and damage painted surfaces. If it gets on your hands or in your eyes, flush the area with clean water right away.

The manual notes that it is normal for the level to go down slightly as the brake pads wear, or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high. If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, there may be a serious problem.

If the brake system warning light comes on

In the RAV4 Owner's Manual (OM0R024U), the red brake system warning light (with a warning buzzer) indicates that the brake fluid level is low or the brake system is malfunctioning. The manual says to stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer, because continuing to drive the vehicle may be dangerous.

A yellow brake system warning light indicates a malfunction in the parking brake system; the manual says to have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.

Toyota brake fluid FAQ

How often should Toyota brake fluid be changed?

In the eight 2025-2026 Toyota Warranty & Maintenance Guides we read, there is no set mileage for replacing brake fluid. They schedule a check of brake fluid level and condition, as part of "All Fluid Levels," at every 5,000-mile interval on the maintenance chart. The guides say your dealer may recommend services based on the inspection results.

Is a brake fluid flush required to keep my Toyota warranty?

The guides list brake fluid as an inspection item, not a replacement item. They also say that services your dealer recommends beyond the scheduled maintenance chart are not required to maintain your warranty coverage, and that you can ask your dealer to explain any recommended maintenance that is not in the chart.

Why does brake fluid need checking at all?

Toyota's RAV4 Owner's Manual says brake fluid can absorb moisture from the air, and excess moisture in the brake fluid can cause a dangerous loss of braking efficiency. That is why the manual says to use only newly opened brake fluid when adding it.

What brake fluid does a Toyota use?

It depends on the model. The RAV4 Owner's Manual (OM0R024U) lists FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 or SAE J1703 brake fluid, or FMVSS No.116 DOT 4 or SAE J1704. Check the owner's manual for your own model and year before adding any fluid.

My brake fluid level is a little low. Is that a problem?

The RAV4 manual says it is normal for the level to go down slightly as the brake pads wear, or when the fluid level in the accumulator is high. If the reservoir needs frequent refilling, the manual says there may be a serious problem, so have the brakes inspected.

Can Elgin Toyota check my brake fluid?

Yes. Our service team in Streamwood can check the brake fluid level and condition along with the pads, discs, lines and hoses during scheduled maintenance. See the service hours above or schedule online.
