Toyota Corolla Oil Type and Capacity
The right oil and the right amount, straight from Toyota's 2026 Corolla Owner's Manual and Warranty & Maintenance Guide, both read October 29, 2026. If you service your Corolla with us in Streamwood, here is what the manual says to expect.

What oil does a Toyota Corolla take, and how much?
For the 2026 Corolla with the 2.0-liter gas engine (M20A-FKS), Toyota's owner's manual calls for JASO GLV-1 engine oil, SAE 0W-8. A drain and refill takes about 4.4 qt. (4.2 L) with the oil filter, or 4.1 qt. (3.9 L) without it. Toyota calls these reference quantities, so finish by checking the dipstick.

From Toyota's 2026 Corolla Owner's Manual for July 2026 and later production (OM12W27U), pages 302 and 386-387, read October 29, 2026. The manuals for earlier 2026 production (OM02722U and OM02751U) list the same engine, grade, viscosity and drain and refill capacities. Check your own manual for a hybrid, hatchback or GR model.
Why 0W-8, and what the numbers mean
The manual says SAE 0W-8 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. The "0W" describes the oil's cold startability: a lower number before the W allows easier starting in cold weather. The "8" describes its viscosity when the oil is at high temperature.
Toyota says the car is filled with Toyota Genuine Motor Oil, and to use Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that satisfies the grade and viscosity above. The manual points to the JASO GLV-1 mark on some oil containers to help you pick an oil that qualifies.
How often to change the oil
From the 2026 Corolla Warranty & Maintenance Guide:
Maintenance chart
The chart shows the engine oil and oil filter replaced at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000 miles, with other inspections every 5,000 miles.
Miles or months
The guide says to get scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.
Tougher use
For dusty or dirt roads, towing or heavy loads, long idling or low-speed driving, or repeated trips under five miles in below-freezing temperatures, the guide says to replace the oil and filter at 5,000 miles or six months.
Between changes
The manual says some oil is consumed while driving, and you may need to top up between oil changes.
Schedules are from Toyota's 2026 Corolla Warranty & Maintenance Guide, read October 29, 2026. Your own guide is the final word for your car.
How to check the oil level on a Corolla
The owner's manual says to check the oil on the dipstick with the engine at operating temperature and turned off:
- Park on level ground. After warming up the engine and turning it off, wait about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine.
- Holding a rag under the end, pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean.
- Reinsert the dipstick fully, pull it out again and check that the oil level is above the low level mark.
- If the level is below or near the low level mark, remove the oil filler cap and add oil of the same type already in the engine, slowly, checking the dipstick as you go. Keep the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark, then refit the cap.
The manual lists times when oil consumption may increase: when the engine is new, with low-quality oil or the wrong viscosity, at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, with frequent acceleration and deceleration, and with long idling or heavy traffic. It also says repeated short trips without the engine warming up can raise the oil level on the dipstick. That is not a malfunction, but if the level is above the refill upper limit mark, contact your Toyota dealer. Avoid overfilling: the manual warns the engine could be damaged.
Maintenance messages and the low oil pressure light
"Maintenance Required Soon" means the maintenance on the schedule for the distance driven should be done soon; the manual says it comes on about 4,500 miles after the message was reset. "Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer" comes on about 5,000 miles after a reset and means that maintenance is due.
After the maintenance is done, reset the message. On cars with the 7-inch or the 12.3-inch display, the manual's steps go through the multi-information display settings to "Vehicle Settings", then "Scheduled Maintenance", and "Yes". A message confirms the reset.
The low engine oil pressure warning light, with a buzzer, means the engine oil pressure is excessively low. The manual says to stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

Toyota Corolla oil FAQ
What oil does a 2026 Toyota Corolla take?
Toyota's 2026 Corolla Owner's Manual calls for oil that meets the JASO GLV-1 grade with a recommended viscosity of SAE 0W-8, using Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that meets that grade and viscosity. The manual lists this for the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas engine (M20A-FKS).
How much oil does a 2026 Corolla hold?
The manual lists 4.4 qt. (4.2 L) with the filter and 4.1 qt. (3.9 L) without it, for a drain and refill. Toyota calls these reference quantities: when you add oil, keep the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark on the dipstick.
Can I use 0W-16 or 0W-20 in my Corolla?
The manual says SAE 0W-8 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If 0W-8 is not available, SAE 0W-16 may be used, but it must be replaced with 0W-8 at the next oil change. The manual does not list 0W-20 for this engine.
What is JASO GLV-1?
It is the oil grade the 2026 Corolla manual specifies. The manual says the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) GLV-1 mark is added to some oil containers to help you select the oil you should use.
How often should Corolla oil be changed?
The maintenance chart in the 2026 Corolla Warranty & Maintenance Guide shows the engine oil and oil filter replaced every 10,000 miles. The guide says to get scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first, and to replace the oil and filter at 5,000 miles or six months under its special operating conditions, such as dusty roads, towing or repeated short trips in below-freezing temperatures.
Does this apply to the Corolla Hybrid or Corolla Hatchback?
This page is based on the 2026 Corolla owner's manuals listed above, whose specifications list only the 2.0-liter M20A-FKS gas engine. For a Corolla Hybrid, Corolla Hatchback or GR Corolla, check the owner's manual for your car, or ask our service team.
Can Elgin Toyota change the oil in my Corolla?
Yes. Our service team in Streamwood can change the oil and filter with oil that meets the grade and viscosity in your owner's manual, and reset the maintenance reminder. See the service hours above or schedule online.
