When Should You Get the First Oil Change on a New Car?

The old 1,500-mile break-in oil change is gone. On a new Toyota the first oil change is the 10,000-mile or 12-month service, and the first visit at 5,000 miles is a rotation and inspection. Here is the schedule and what ToyotaCare covers.

Quick answer

On a new Toyota that uses 0W-20 synthetic oil, which is nearly every current model, Toyota's schedule calls for the first oil and filter change at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Before that, at 5,000 miles or 6 months, the truck or car comes in for a tire rotation and a multi-point inspection with no oil change. Under special operating conditions such as towing, dirt roads or repeated short trips in freezing weather, the oil interval drops to 5,000 miles. ToyotaCare covers these factory scheduled services for 2 years or 25,000 miles.

For engines where 0W-20 is only an option to conventional 5W-20 or 5W-30, the oil change is every 5,000 miles or 6 months regardless of which oil is used. The Warranty & Maintenance Guide in the glove box shows which applies to your car.

Why not sooner?

Modern Toyota engines are assembled to tolerances that do not shed the metal particles early engines did, and the factory fill is the same 0W-20 synthetic the schedule is built on. Changing it at 1,500 or 3,000 miles does no harm, but it does nothing the 10,000-mile change does not. What does matter early on is the 5,000-mile inspection: it catches a tire pressure problem, a loose shield or a fluid level before it becomes a repair.

When the first oil change comes sooner

  • Repeated trips of under five miles in temperatures below 32 degrees F: common for a second car in an Elgin winter.
  • Driving on dirt or dusty roads, or towing and heavy loads.
  • Extended idling or long stretches of low-speed driving.
  • The owner's manual says 5,000 miles for the engine, as on some older or specialized models.

If any of these describe your driving, change the oil at 5,000 miles. Toyota calls these special operating conditions and the shorter interval applies to any oil type.

What ToyotaCare includes

ToyotaCare comes with every new Toyota: normal factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus 24-hour roadside assistance for 2 years with unlimited miles. That covers the 5,000-mile rotations and inspections and the 10,000- and 20,000-mile oil changes. Services outside the normal schedule, such as a 5,000-mile oil change for severe use, may not be included; ask our advisors. Schedule your ToyotaCare visit.

Frequently asked questions

When is the first oil change on a new Toyota?

At 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, on engines that use 0W-20 synthetic. The 5,000-mile visit is a tire rotation and inspection.

Should I change the oil at 1,000 or 1,500 miles on a new car?

Not on a current Toyota. The factory fill is the specified 0W-20 synthetic and the engine does not need an early change.

Does ToyotaCare cover the first oil change?

Yes. ToyotaCare covers normal factory scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles, including the oil changes at 10,000 and 20,000 miles.

What if I mostly drive short trips in winter?

That is a special operating condition in Toyota's schedule. Change the oil every 5,000 miles.

Does the maintenance light tell me when the oil is due?

The reminder comes on every 5,000 miles for the scheduled visit, whether that visit is a rotation or an oil change.
