2026 Toyota 4Runner Towing Capacity
Every 2026 4Runner is rated to tow either 6,000 lb. or 5,800 lb., and the grade decides which. Here is the rating for each grade, the towing equipment that comes standard, and what else to check before you hook up a trailer. From toyota.com's 2026 4Runner specifications page (weights and capacities, mechanical and performance), read October 27, 2026. i-FORCE is the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine; i-FORCE MAX is the 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain. Every grade uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. RWD is rear-wheel drive. 4WD is part-time four-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case on every grade except the Limited (gas and i-FORCE MAX) and Platinum, which use full-time 4WD.
i-FORCE or i-FORCE MAX: does the hybrid tow more?
Not on the 2026 4Runner. The i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is rated at 278 hp and 317 lb.-ft. of torque, and every grade that uses it is listed at 6,000 lb.
The i-FORCE MAX 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain is rated at 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque (323 hp on the Trailhunter). It is listed at 6,000 lb. on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and Limited, and at 5,800 lb. on the Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter, which come only with i-FORCE MAX.

Towing capacity is not the only limit
The towing capacity is the most a 4Runner is rated to pull. The trailer, the cargo on it, your passengers and the cargo inside the SUV all have to stay within the vehicle's other weight limits too.
Toyota.com lists Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings from 6,005 lb. (SR5 with rear-wheel drive) to 6,505 lb. (i-FORCE MAX grades), with curb weights from 4,455 lb. (SR5 with rear-wheel drive) to 5,500 lb. (Trailhunter). The owner's manual for your 4Runner and model year has the full set of limits, so read it before your first trip with a trailer.

How much can a 2026 Toyota 4Runner tow?
Up to 6,000 lb. Toyota.com lists 6,000 lb. for the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and Limited, including the i-FORCE MAX versions of the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and Limited. The Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter are listed at 5,800 lb.
Does the i-FORCE MAX hybrid 4Runner tow more?
No. On toyota.com's 2026 4Runner specifications, the i-FORCE MAX TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and Limited carry the same 6,000-lb. rating as the gas i-FORCE grades, and the Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter, which come only with i-FORCE MAX, are listed at 5,800 lb.
Does every 2026 4Runner come with a tow hitch?
Yes. Toyota.com lists an integrated towing receiver hitch and wiring harness with 4- and 7-pin connectors as standard on every 2026 4Runner grade, along with Trailer Sway Control and TOW/HAUL driving modes.
Which 4Runner grades have a built-in trailer brake controller?
The Integrated Trailer Brake Controller and Trailer Backup Guide come standard on the Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter as part of the Tow Tech Package. On the TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium (gas and i-FORCE MAX) and Limited (gas and i-FORCE MAX) they are available as part of an option package. They are not offered on the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road or TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX.
Is the towing capacity the only limit I need to check?
No. The trailer, its cargo, your passengers and your own cargo all have to stay within the weight limits for your 4Runner. Toyota.com lists Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings from 6,005 lb. to 6,505 lb. depending on grade and drivetrain. The owner's manual for your model year has the full set of limits.
