Ideally, for auto safety, we'd always like to be one step ahead. And, part of this is being notified about potential hazards (ice on the road, a cyclist or pedestrian) before they become real-life collisions.
Luckily many astute automakers, including our preferred brand, here at Elgin Toyota Scion in Elgin, IL, Toyota, are working on technology to make hazard-alert a reality. In fact, some of the technology has become so innovative that it has the potential to alert drivers to the very type of vehicle that is approaching, such as an emergency vehicle with a siren for which you must pull over.
Currently such technology is in the stage where it is being tested and decided how it can be implemented into new vehicle lineups like the new Toyota range in the future.
The specifics, are that the technology is what's known as DSRC (dedicated short-range communication) technology for cars to communicate to external infrastructures as well as other vehicles to provide alert regarding potential hazards. This has the potential to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by vehicle accidents, dramatically.
However, Toyota recognizes the limitations currently in place for the new technology. And recently, the Principal Researcher at Toyota InfoTechnology Center in Silicon Valley, John Kenney, addressed some concerns before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, U.S. Congress.
How will these limitations (such as Bandwidth restrictions) be dealt with? That's the part that remains to be seen. However, any developments regarding Toyota' involvement will surely be posted right here to the Elgin Toyota Scion blog. So, for this news and more, make sure to stay tuned via your RSS feed.
