When you visit our showroom at Elgin Toyota Scion, you see elegant, stylish new cars, with integrated technology, and an eye-pleasing palette of paint choices. People always have comments when a brand-new model comes out, or the next generation of a familiar model is released.

But who makes these designs? Where does Toyota get its distinctive look?

The answer to that lies, at least in part, in Calty Design Research, Inc. Calty first opened in California in 1973. Though the team only had six designers, it was able to lend distinctly American boldness to the iconic 1978 Toyota Celica Liftback.

Today, Calty has campuses in Newport Beach, San Francisco, and Ann Arbor. Using traditional materials, like pencil and paper, and clay milling, combined with modern methods like Computer Aided Design and 3D Printing, Calty has created designs for some of our favorite concepts and production models, including the 2015 Camry, 2016 Tacoma, and 2016 Avalon.

In short, many of our new Toyota cars, trucks, and SUVs were designed right here in the United States. Come see what American automotive design looks like at Elgin Toyota Scion.
