Toyota Tacoma Oil Type and Capacity

The right oil and the right amount, straight from Toyota's 2026 Tacoma Owner's Manual (OM04051U) and Warranty & Maintenance Guide, both read October 29, 2026. If you service your Tacoma with us in Streamwood, here is what the manual says to expect.

What oil does a Toyota Tacoma take, and how much?

For the 2026 Tacoma with the 2.4-liter turbocharged gas engine (T24A-FTS), Toyota's owner's manual calls for ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil, SAE 0W-20. A drain and refill takes about 5.9 qt. (5.6 L) with the oil filter, or 5.6 qt. (5.3 L) without it. Toyota calls these reference quantities, so finish by checking the dipstick.

From Toyota's 2026 Tacoma Owner's Manual (OM04051U), pages 529-530 and 621-622, read October 29, 2026. The manual's specifications list only this gas engine; if your Tacoma has a hybrid powertrain, check the owner's manual for your truck.

Why 0W-20, and what the numbers mean

The manual says SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. The "0W" describes the oil's cold startability: a lower number before the W allows easier starting in cold weather. The "20" describes its viscosity when the oil is at high temperature.

Toyota says the truck is filled with Toyota Genuine Motor Oil, and to use Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that satisfies the grade and viscosity above. The manual also points to the ILSAC Certification Mark on oil containers to help you pick an oil that qualifies.

How often to change the oil

From footnote 4 of the 2026 Tacoma Warranty & Maintenance Guide:

Normal driving

Replace both the engine oil and oil filter after 12 months, or when driven over 10,000 miles since the last oil change, even if the maintenance reminder has not appeared.

Tougher use

Every 5,000 miles or 6 months if the truck is mainly driven on dirt or dusty roads, or on repeated trips under five miles in below-freezing temperatures.

Reminder

The guide notes the 12-month rule can make the maintenance reminder appear before 10,000 miles.

Between changes

The manual says some oil is consumed while driving, and you may need to top up between oil changes.

Schedules are from Toyota's 2026 Tacoma Warranty & Maintenance Guide, read October 29, 2026. Your own guide is the final word for your truck.

How to check the oil level on a Tacoma

The owner's manual says to check the oil on the dipstick with the engine at operating temperature and turned off:

  1. Park on level ground. After warming up the engine and turning it off, wait about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine.
  2. Holding a rag under the end, pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean.
  3. Reinsert the dipstick fully, pull it out again and check that the oil level is above the low level mark.
  4. If the level is below or near the low level mark, remove the oil filler cap and add oil of the same type already in the engine, slowly, checking the dipstick as you go. Keep the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark, then refit the cap.

The manual lists times when oil consumption may increase: when the engine is new, with low-quality oil or the wrong viscosity, at high engine speeds, with heavy loads or towing, with frequent acceleration and deceleration, and with long idling or heavy traffic. It also says repeated short trips without the engine warming up can raise the oil level on the dipstick. That is not a malfunction, but if the level is above the refill upper limit mark, contact your Toyota dealer. Avoid overfilling: the manual warns the engine could be damaged.

Oil messages and the low oil pressure light

"Oil Maintenance Required Soon" means the oil change should be scheduled. The manual says to check the oil and change it if necessary. "Oil Maintenance Required" means the oil should be changed: have the engine oil and filter checked and changed by your Toyota dealer.

After an oil change, the oil maintenance data needs to be reset. On trucks with the 7-inch display, the manual's steps go through the meter control switches to "Vehicle Settings" and then "Oil Maintenance"; 12.3-inch display trucks have a similar menu path. A message confirms the reset.

The low engine oil pressure warning light, with a buzzer, means the engine oil pressure is excessively low. The manual says to stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

Toyota Tacoma oil FAQ

What oil does a 2026 Toyota Tacoma take?

Toyota's 2026 Tacoma Owner's Manual (OM04051U) calls for ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil with a recommended viscosity of SAE 0W-20, using Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent that meets that grade and viscosity. The manual lists this for the 2.4-liter turbocharged gas engine (T24A-FTS) in its specifications.

How much oil does a 2026 Tacoma hold?

The manual lists 5.9 qt. (5.6 L) with the filter and 5.6 qt. (5.3 L) without it, for a drain and refill. Toyota calls these reference quantities: when you add oil, the manual says to keep the level between the low level mark and the refill upper limit mark on the dipstick.

Can I use 5W-20 in my Tacoma?

The manual says SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 may be used, but it must be replaced with 0W-20 at the next oil change.

Does the Tacoma need synthetic oil?

The owner's manual specifies an oil grade and viscosity (ILSAC GF-6A, SAE 0W-20) rather than a base oil. Any oil that meets that grade and viscosity satisfies the manual.

How often should Tacoma oil be changed?

The 2026 Tacoma Warranty & Maintenance Guide says to replace the engine oil and filter after 12 months, or when driven over 10,000 miles since the last oil change, even when the maintenance reminder does not appear. If the truck is mainly driven on dirt or dusty roads, or on repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below freezing, the guide says every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Does this apply to a hybrid Tacoma?

This page is based on the 2026 Tacoma Owner's Manual OM04051U, whose specifications list only the 2.4-liter turbocharged gas engine. If your Tacoma has a hybrid powertrain, use the owner's manual for your truck, or ask our service team.

Can Elgin Toyota change the oil in my Tacoma?

Yes. Our service team in Streamwood can change the oil and filter with oil that meets the grade and viscosity in your owner's manual, and reset the oil maintenance reminder. See the service hours above or schedule online.
